Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fourth-Quarter Run Pushes Women's Basketball to Win at Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. – A 14-0 fourth-quarter run made the difference as the William Paterson women's basketball team (11-5, 6-3 NJAC) earned a 67-53 road New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory at Rutgers-Camden (2-14, 0-9 NJAC) on Jan. 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Rutgers-Camden scored to open the fourth quarter to make it a one-point game (46-45) in favor of the Pioneers before William Paterson erupted for a 14-0 run. The Pioneers run started at 8:49 and they held the Scarlet Raptors without a basket for a stretch of 4:41 as junior Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley), freshman Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) and senior Justina Cabezas (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) were responsible for the 14 William Paterson points.
  • Leading by 15 (60-45) with 4:21 remaining in the game, the Pioneers were able to ward off any Rutgers-Camden attack and secure the conference road victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Cabezas tied her career-best scoring mark with 27 points on 12-of-17 (.705) shooting to go along with six rebounds and a season-high four steals.
  • It was her fourth 20-point performance of the season and the first time since the 2021-22 campaign that she logged back-to-back games with 20 or more points.
  • Smith tallied 14 points and added five boards and a season-high four steals to her stat line.
  • Wells finished with 13 points on 4-of-8 (.500) shooting with five rebounds and a career-best five assists.
  • The trio of Cabezas, Smith and Wells combined for 54 of the Pioneers' 67 points.
