Women's Basketball Bests Rowan 90-84 in Overtime Thriller

GLASSBORO, N.J. – A late fourth-quarter run forced overtime before the William Paterson women's basketball team (5-2, 2-1 NJAC) captured a thrilling 90-84 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory at Rowan (4-4, 1-2 NJAC) on Dec. 3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • With less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter and trailing by 18 (76-58), senior Justina Cabezas (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) scored and sparked a 19-1 run for the Pioneers to even the score and send the game into overtime.
  • During that run, William Paterson went 7-of-8 (.875) from the field and 3-of-3 (1.000) from deep with junior Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) leading the charge with 12 points.  
  • The two sides traded baskets in overtime until the Pioneers went on a 6-0 run with 1:50 on the clock to go ahead by seven (89-82) and eventually secure the conference victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Pioneers are off to their best start to a season since the 2014-15 squad opened the year with a 5-2 record.  
  • Smith scored a career-high 36 points on 10-of-18 shooting (.556) with five 3-pointers and an 11-of-12 (.917) effort from the foul line.
  • It was her first career 30-point performance.
  • She added four assists, three steals and three rebounds to her stat line.
  • Freshman Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) extended her double-digit scoring streak to five games after tallying a career-best 17 points to pair with a career-high eight rebounds.
  • Cabezas logged a double-double after finishing with 16 points and 10 boards to go along with six assists.
  • Senior Yakira Rosa (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) recorded 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Pioneers will return to the Sports and Recreation Center on Wednesday, Dec. 7, to host Montclair State for a 6:00 p.m. NJAC tilt.
