Men’s Basketball Cruises to 67-40 Road Win at Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (2-0) picked up its first road victory of the season after defeating Brooklyn (1-4), 67-40, on Nov. 16.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • It was a six-point game (24-18) in favor of William Paterson with less than five minutes remaining in the first half before a layup by sophomore David Martinez (Maywood, N.J./Hackensack) sparked a lengthy 16-0 run for the Pioneers. The run started with 4:44 left in the first and lasted until the 18:42 mark of the second stanza. During that stretch, the Pioneers shot 8-of-11 (.727) from the floor.
  • Brooklyn trimmed the deficit to as low as 15 (43-28) with 13:54 left to play, but William Paterson countered with a 14-2 run before going on to secure the double-digit road win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior Adryan Lopez (Garfield, N.J./Lyndhurst) came one point shy of tying his career-best mark after finishing with 17 points on 8-of-12 (.667) shooting.
  • He added six rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals to his stat line.
  • Junior Tyreek Montgomery (Neptune, N.J./Admiral Farragut) logged his second consecutive double-digit scoring effort with 13 points to go along with six boards.
  • Seniors Michael Gilmore (Teaneck, N.J./Pine Forge Academy) and Cody Ripato (Tollesboro, Ky./Augusta) logged eight points apiece and combined for 11 boards.
  • Sophomore Neftali Valentin (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) reeled in a career-high eight rebounds.
  • The 2-0 start to the season marks the second straight year that William Paterson has claimed back-to-back victories in its first two outings.

UP NEXT:
  • The Pioneers will head to Purchase, N.Y., this weekend to take part in the two-day Manhattanville Tournament. William Paterson will open against host Manhattanville on Friday, Nov. 18, at 8:00 p.m.
