Women's Basketball Falls to NJCU in Overtime Thriller

WAYNE, N.J.- The William Paterson women's basketball team (9-7, 8-4 NJAC) fell on the road at New Jersey City (6-6, 4-3 NJAC) 89-84 in overtime, despite making a 22 point fourth quarter comeback on Jan 26.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • NJCU outscored WP 34-27 in the first half.
  • The Gothic Knights held a 64-42 lead with 8:32 remaining in regulation.
  • A three pointer from junior guard Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) cut the deficit, as WP trailed 66-59 at the 3:18 mark.
  • Junior forward Qiana Vigo (Ewing, N.J./The Hill School) hit a step back three with 19 seconds left, leaving the Gothic Knights with a 73-70 lead. 
  • Junior guard Yakira Rosa (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) stole the inbound pass on the following two possessions, leading to two Smith layups, giving WP a 74-73 lead with eight seconds left.
  • NJCU drew a fell on the next possession, hitting one-of-two free throws, tying the game at 74-74 at the end of regulation.
  • The Gothic Knights outscored the Pioneers' 15-10 in overtime.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior forward Justina Cabezas (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) finished with a career-high 27 points, while grabbing nine boards.
  • Smith also scored a career-high 26 points, shooting five-for-six (.833) from behind the arc.
  • Vigo secured her second double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
