WILLIAMSPORT, PA-  The William Paterson women's basketball team (5-4) took down Lycoming (3-8) on the road, 58-55, in the opening round of the Hoops for Hounds Tournament on Dec. 29.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Lycoming held a 22-16 lead with 3:04 left in the first half, but a 11-3 run gave the Pioneers' a 27-25 lead at halftime.
• The third quarter ended in a 42-42 tie.
• A made layup by senior forward Brianna Brooks (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) with 3:08 left to play, gave WP a 53-46 advantage.
• Lycoming cut the score to 56-53 with 50 seconds remaining.
• Made free throws by junior guards Yakira Rosa (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) and Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) in the final minute secured the victory for WP.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Smith led WP with 18 points and three assists.
• Senior forward Justina Cabezas (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) finished with 14 points and 9 rebounds, while adding three steals.

UP NEXT:

• WP takes on Gwynedd Mercy in the next round of the Hoops for Hounds Tournament on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 12:00 p.m.
