Women's Basketball Rolls Past Gwynedd Mercy, 75-65

WILLIAMSPORT, PA.- The William Paterson women's basketball team (6-4) secured a 75-65 road victory against Gwynedd Mercy (6-7) in the final round of the Hoops for Hounds Tournament on Dec. 30. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WP held a 22-17 lead with 1:34 left in the first quarter.
  • A close second quarter ended with a layup to beat the buzzer from junior guard Precious Allah (Neptune, N.J./Monmouth Regional), giving the Pioneers' a 39-33 advantage 
  • The Pioneers' lead grew even more as they led 56-43 with 1:35 left in the third.
  • The Griffins cut the advantage to just five points at 63-58 with 4:35 remaining, but strong shooting late from WP secured the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior forward Justina Cabezas (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds,grabbing her season high in rebounds and her second double-double of the season.
  • Junior forward Qiana Vigo (Ewing, N.J./The Hill School) also finished with her first double-double as a Pioneer, with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Freshman guard Jade Martinez (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) added a career-high 10 points.
  • Cabezas was named to the All-Tournament team
