MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Junior
Malcolm McLeod (Teaneck, N.J./Eastern Christian) scored a career-high 22 points, and senior
Sean Smith (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) matched his personal-best with 36 tallies as William Paterson men's basketball (8-9, 4-6 NJAC) took down New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Montclair State (8-9, 6-4 NJAC), 93-74, Jan. 22.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Coming off a season-worst shooting performance in its previous game, the WP offensive was firing on all cylinders from the opening tip. The Pioneers shot 59.4 (19-32) percent in the first half, including 6-of-11 (.545) from three-point range and 9-of-11 (.818) from the charity stripe to open a commanding 25-point lead at the break, 53-28.
- Once play resumed, the Red Hawks immediately began to chip away at the deficit, outscoring the Pioneers 28-9 to make it a six-point affair, 62-56, with 11:05 remaining. WP answered with a 10-1 scoring burst of its own to increase the advantage to 15 (72-57) and never looked back, coasting to a 19-point triumph.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- McLeod finished 10-for-14 (.714) from the field, while Smith knocked down five three-pointers and hit 15-of-18 (.833) attempts from the free-throw line.
- Junior guard Domenic Mignone (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) contributed 20 points and a team-best eight rebounds, and senior guard Anthony Uribe (Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Catholic) handed out seven assists to lead all players.
