McLeod, Smith Lead Men’s Basketball to Huge Win at Montclair State, 93-74

Pioneers Never Trail and Pick Up a Crucial Conference Win

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Junior Malcolm McLeod (Teaneck, N.J./Eastern Christian) scored a career-high 22 points, and senior Sean Smith (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) matched his personal-best with 36 tallies as William Paterson men's basketball (8-9, 4-6 NJAC) took down New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Montclair State (8-9, 6-4 NJAC), 93-74, Jan. 22.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Coming off a season-worst shooting performance in its previous game, the WP offensive was firing on all cylinders from the opening tip. The Pioneers shot 59.4 (19-32) percent in the first half, including 6-of-11 (.545) from three-point range and 9-of-11 (.818) from the charity stripe to open a commanding 25-point lead at the break, 53-28.
  • Once play resumed, the Red Hawks immediately began to chip away at the deficit, outscoring the Pioneers 28-9 to make it a six-point affair, 62-56, with 11:05 remaining. WP answered with a 10-1 scoring burst of its own to increase the advantage to 15 (72-57) and never looked back, coasting to a 19-point triumph.
