Rosa’s Double-Double Paces Women’s Basketball Past Ramapo, 67-58

Four Pioneers Score in Double Figures

WAYNE, N.J. – Freshman guard Yakira Rosa (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) registered her first collegiate double-double, and three other Pioneers scored in double figures as William Paterson women's basketball (8-8, 6-3 NJAC) pulled away late to secure a 67-58 victory against Ramapo (8-8, 2-7 NJAC) Jan. 18.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After racing out to a 21-16 lead after 10 minutes, WP was outscored by Ramapo 12-6 in the second period, which allowed the visitors to hold a one-point edge at the break, 28-27.
  • Trailing 35-31 at the 6:55 mark of the third quarter, back-to-back three-pointer by Rosa and senior guard Alisa Giordano (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) began a 17-2 run which helped the Pioneers open an 11-point cushion heading into the fourth stanza, 48-37. The Roadrunners would rally and cut the deficit to six (60-54) with 1:20 left, but the Pioneers would knock down seven free throws late to ice the game and come away with the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Rosa finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and added three assists and two steals.
  • Giordano scored a team-high 12 tallies, while sophomore Danica DeFrank (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) and junior Brianna Brooks (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
  • William Paterson committed just 13 turnovers, tying a season low and turned 22 Ramapo miscues into 24 points.
