Brianna Brooks (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) scored a career-best 15 points, and freshman guard
Madison Dulude (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) registered her second double-double of the season as William Paterson women's basketball (7-7, 5-2) handed Kean (10-4, 6-1) its first New Jersey Athletic Conference loss of the season, 67-65, Jan. 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Following a tightly-contested first quarter in which WP held a 16-15 edge, the Pioneers outscored the Cougars 25-16 in the second period to take a 10-point cushion into halftime, 41-31.
- After both teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter, WP pushed its advantage to a game-high 12 (60-48, 9:15) early in the fourth following a driving layup from senior guard Alisa Giordano (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge). Kean would rally, using a 14-3 run to make it a one-point affair, 63-62, with 1:55 remaining. But, the Pioneers would sink four late free throws to come away with the 67-65 home win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Dulude dropped 26 points, her fourth 20+ point scoring output of the season, and added 10 rebounds.
- Brooks scored 15 off the bench on 6-of-12 shooting, while Giordano handed out five dimes to go along with eight tallies.
- Sophomore forward Justina Cabezas (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) notched seven points and six boards, and classmate Danica DeFrank (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) led all players with four steals.
