MADISON, N.J. – Running backs
Terrique Riddick (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) and
Marcel Mason (Plainfield, N.J./Piscataway) combined for 245 yards rushing and four touchdowns as William Paterson football (1-1) rallied from a 17-0 second half deficit to upset FDU-Florham, 28-23, Sept. 13.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- FDU struck first, capping off an 18-play, 86-yard opening drive with a five-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Caserta to Tyler Adams.
- The Devils pushed the lead to double-digits in the second quarter when Nick Maciejewski connected on a 32-yard field goal (10-0, 8:02)
- Following a six-yard scoring run the Devils, WP got on the scoreboard when Riddick took a handoff and cutback left untouched up the middle 41-yards to the end zone. Junior kicker Mahadye Paniahie (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany ) kicked the extra point for a 17-7 score at 2:26 in the third quarter.
- Following a three-and-out by FDU, Mason's one-yard plunge finished off a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive that cut the deficit to three (17-14, 11:52 fourth).
- Aided by a pair of FDU pass inference penalties on its next possession, WP gained lead, 21-17, when Riddick crossed the goal line on a two-yard scoring surge.
- Mason's second touchdown of the night, a 10-yard scamper, made it 28-17.
- Caserta's second touchdown pass of the evening, a 14-yard strike to Khrystan Camillo, made it a one-score game, but WP was able to run out the clock and come away with the 28-23 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Riddick finished with 167 yards on 11 attempts and two scores, and Mason tallied 78 yards on 19 attempts and a pair of touchdowns.
- Freshman quarterback George Crespo (Bronx, N.Y./Orange) finished his collegiate start 17-for-25 for 107 yards while adding 35 on the ground.
- Junior Siraj Abdul-Malik (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) ended with five receptions for a team-high 42 yards, and freshman Matt Clarke (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) caught seven balls for 33 yards.
- Defensively, junior linebacker Jared Salgado (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany Hills) registered a team-high 13 tackles.
- Sophomore linebacker Bryan King (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) ended his night with 10 stops (2.0 TFL, 1.0 sack).
- Back-to-back FDU drives in the first quarter ended with fumble recoveries by junior linebacker Sean Maldonato (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland Regional). The first forced by senior linebacker Andrew Anthony (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay), and the second when sophomore defensive lineman Nasir Adams (Newark, N.J./Hudson Catholic) striped the ball carrier at the WP six yard line.
- WP ran for 276 yards, with 230 coming after intermission.
- Tonight's triumph was the first head coaching victory for William Paterson's Dustin Johnson.
