Football Cruises to 35-0 Victory at Maritime

Pioneers shut out Privateers for second straight win

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The William Paterson football team (2-1) limited Maritime (1-3) to 88 total yards, including just six on the ground, as the Pioneers earned their second consecutive win, 35-0, Sept. 28.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers found the end zone on their second offensive possession as junior running back Marcel Mason (Plainfield, N.J./Piscataway) scored from six yards out. Junior Mahadye Paniahie's (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany ) extra point made it 7-0 at 7:31 in the first quarter.
  • Following a fourth-down fumble recovery by senior defensive end Brandon Yaw (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) that gave WP the ball at the Maritime three yard line, Mason's second scoring plunge extended the lead to 13-0 (2:01 first).
  • After a punt on the Privateers' next drive, freshman running back Terrique Riddick (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) capped off a nine-play, 58-yard drive with a 30-yard touchdown run to push the advantage to 20-0 (9:46 second).
  • WP made it 27-0 less than three minutes into the third quarter as Riddick scored on a three-yard rush.
  • Facing third-and-seven from the Maritime 37, senior quarterback Tracy Fudge, Jr. (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) found freshman wide receiver Matt Clarke (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) for a 32-yard completion, setting up first-and-goal from the five. Two plays later, Fudge connected with junior tight end William Frese (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) on a seven-yard scoring strike. The ensuing PAT was blocked, but senior quarterback Mike Yarosz (Montague, N.J./High Point Regional) scooped up the ball, scrambled, and hit sophomore defensive lineman Nasir Adams (Newark, N.J./Hudson Catholic) to push the lead to 35-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Defensively, sophomore linebacker Bryan King (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) paced the Pioneers with eight stops (1.5 TFL, 1.0 sack), while senior linebacker Andrew Anthony (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) tallied six tackles (0.5 TFL).
  • WP recorded four turnovers as senior Tyler Gross (Pomona, N.Y./North Rockland) and freshmen RJ Massey (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) and Devyn Blount (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) each collected an interception to go along with Yaw's fumble recovery.
  • Riddick carried 15 times for 97 yards and two touchdowns, while Mason added 86 yards on 19 rushes with two scores.
  • Clarke caught four passes for 92 yards, and Frese's TD reception was the fifth of his career.
  • Freshman quarterback George Crespo (Bronx, N.Y./Orange) finished 5-for-11 for 100 yards. Fudge ended his afternoon 2-for-4 for 39 yards and a TD.
  • The shutout was the first by WP since a 21-0 decision at The College of New Jersey on Oct. 25, 2014.
