Baseball Suffers 6-2 Loss to U.S. Merchant Marine

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (15-9) suffered a 6-2 non-conference loss April 9 against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (20-7). The game was called after seven innings due to darkness, this after an 81-minute lightning delay interrupted the top of the seventh.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Mariners used two walks, four singles and an RBI-groundout for a 3-0 advantage in the top of the third inning.
  • USMMA touched home once during the fourth after a pair of base hits and a sacrifice fly.
  • The Pioneers got two runs back during the home half of the sixth when junior right fielder Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) lined a double off the left-field wall, freshman second baseman Colin Lombardo (Edison, N.J./Edison) dropped a single into shallow right field, senior Shane Adams (Cape May, N.J./Cape May Tech) delivered a pinch-hit ground ball to plate Perez, and sophomore center fielder Steven DiGirolamo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) had a base hit to right to score Lombardo.
  • Back-to-back run-scoring singles added two more Merchant Marine runs in the top of the seventh, securing the Mariners' 12 straight victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Lombardo went 2-for-3 and scored a run, while sophomore shortstop Greg Cuevas (West New York, N.J./St. Mary (Rutherford)) and sophomore left fielder Frankie Deane (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) were both 2-for-4 at the dish.
  • Freshman Conor Hollis (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks, tossing 2.1 innings during his first career start   (0-1).

UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson travels to New Jersey City Thursday, April 11, for a 3:30 p.m. conference clash.
