Baseball Takes Two From Lesley, 6-5 and 5-1

Pioneers move to 8-2 on the season

LEESBURG, FLA. – William Paterson baseball (8-2) is off to its best start to a season since 2015 following a sweep of Lesley, 6-5 and 5-1, March 15 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
  • Junior third baseman Dan Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) doubled in senior designated hitter Shane Adams (Cape May, N.J./Cape May Tech) and sophomore first baseman Carson Weis (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) for a 2-0 lead in the home half of the second.
  • In the third, sophomore catcher Steve Yelin (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) launched his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left center, to increase WP's advantage to 3-0.
  • Following a double to left by sophomore center fielder Steven DiGirolamo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont), Yelin ripped an RBI-single through the left side to put the Pioneers up 4-0.
  • The Lesley bats came alive in the top of the sixth, as the Lynx scored five runs on seven hits in the frame to surge ahead.
  • After Adams was hit by the pitch, pinch runner Frankie Deane (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) stole second and came around to score via an RBI-single by Weis in the sixth. With one out and runners on second and third, pinch hitter Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) hit a sac fly to center that plated the game-winner.
  • Senior right-hander Eric Rosenberg (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) (3-1) pitched two innings of relief, including a perfect seventh, to preserve the victory.
Game Two
  • The offensive momentum carried into game two as an RBI-double by Yelin and run-scoring singles by sophomore right fielder Danny Carter (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield), Abate and sophomore shortstop Greg Cuevas (West New York, N.J./St. Mary (Rutherford)) gave WP a 4-0 advantage.
  • Sophomore designated hitter Christopher Liriano (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) added an insurance run in the top of the third, singling home Abate.
  • The lead was more than enough for senior Corey Martinez (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) (2-0), as the righty recorded the second complete game of his career, allowing zero earned runs while striking out six en route to the win.
