Smith’s Record Night Sends Men’s Basketball to an 89-71 Road Triumph over New Jersey City

Pioneers sink 19 three-pointers in the win

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Senior forward Sean Smith (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) set a new William Paterson single-game record with 10 three-pointers and junior guard Domenic Mignone (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) added 24 points as men's basketball (4-2, 1-1 NJAC) hit 19 trifectas and pulled away in the second half to register a convincing 89-71 win over New Jersey City (3-3, 1-1 NJAC) Dec. 4.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WP was lights out from long distance in the first half, draining 8-of-15 (.533) attempts from beyond the arc as the Pioneers held a one-point lead at the break, 36-35.
  • WP's sharpshooting continued in the second half as the Pioneers converted 11-of-16 (.688) shots from long range, stretching the lead to 21 (82-61, 6:49) and cruising to the conference road victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Smith ended with a career-best 36 points on 11-for-17 shooting including 10-for-14 from downtown. His 10 three-pointers set the program single-game mark, besting the old record of nine set by WP great and former NBA player Horace Jenkins 18 years ago (1/20/01). Smith now has 184 threes during his WP tenure, eclipsing another record once held by Jenkins (183, 1998-2001).
  • Mignone added 24 tallies on 10-of-13 (.770) shooting from the field to go along with five assists.
  • Junior forward Malcolm McLeod (Teaneck, N.J./Eastern Christian) finished his night with 17 points, tying his season-high, and senior forward Henry Voorhees (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) pulled down eight rebounds to pace WP.
