Men's Basketball Stymied by Rutgers-Newark

Pioneers fall at home 79-64

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson men's basketball (5-3, 2-2 NJAC) could not erase a large second half deficit, falling to Rutgers-Newark (6-3, 3-1 NJAC), 79-64, Dec. 11

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Shooting struggles by WP early in the opening frame allowed Rutgers-Newark to open a nine-point edge (15-6, 10:07). The Pioneers would slowly chip away at the Scarlet Raiders lead over the eight minutes, eventually tying the game (31-31, 0:59) following a three-pointer, and two free throws, from junior guard Domenic Mignone (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford). RUN would convert one from the charity stripe just before half to lead 32-31 at intermission.
  • The second stanza belonged to the visitors as Rutgers-Newark opened the half on an 18-1 run to build to large 18-point advantage. WP would twice the make it a two-possession game late, but Rutgers-Newark would pull away late for the win, 79-64.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior forward Sean Smith (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) scored team-high 15 points and grabbed five rebounds, while junior forward Nasir Fields (Winslow Twp., N.J./Winslow Twp.) finished with 12 tallies and nine boards.
  • Junior guard Nick Rodriguez (Redding, Calif./Shasta) poured in 11 points, finished 4-of-5 from the field including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
