Football Upended at Montclair State

Pioneers bested by Red Hawks, 36-6

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – William Paterson football (2-7, 0-6 NJAC) dropped its final road contest of the season, 36-6, to Montclair State (5-4, 4-2 NJAC) Nov. 9.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior quarterback Tracy Fudge, Jr. (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) found junior wide receiver Siraj Abdul-Malik (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) along the left sideline and connected on an 82-yard scoring pass, getting the Pioneers on the scoreboard with 1:04 remaining in the third quarter (22-6).
  • Back-to-back defensive stands by William Paterson forced Montclair State to settle for a pair of field goals as the Red Hawks opened a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter.
  • A nine-yard scoring run by Abellany Mendez and 28-yard touchdown pass from Ja'Quill Burch to Kason Campbell gave MSU a 20-0 advantage at halftime.  
  • A safety on a botched snap at 11:28 in the third quarter (22-0), a fourth-quarter 14-yard run by Craig Merkle (29-6, 13:48), and a 21-yard interception return from Jalen Harris (36-6) with 1:22 left concluded the Red Hawk scoring.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Abdul-Malik caught three passes for a season-best 94 yards and touchdown, and freshman running back Terrique Riddick (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) carried 15 times for 46 yards.
  • Fudge was 4-for-14 for 111 yards a touchdown and an interception.
  • Senior linebacker Jadrien Travieso (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) tallied a career-best 12 tackles (eight solo, 2.0 TFL), while classmate Andrew Anthony (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) registered eight tackles (four solo, 1.5 TFL).
