WAYNE, N.J. – Senior guard
Anthony Uribe (Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Catholic) hit a game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation, but the William Paterson men's basketball team (3-2, 0-1 NJAC) saw its improbable comeback fall short during a 106-105 overtime setback to Montclair State (3-2, 1-0 NJAC) in the conference opener for both team Nov. 26.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Tied 35-35 with 4:08 remaining in the opening stanza, a pair of three-pointers by Montclair State gave the visitors their largest lead of the half (41-35, 3:05). WP made it a one-possession game, 46-43, following a corner trifecta from junior guard Nick Rodriguez (Redding, Calif./Shasta), but MSU could connect on a buzzer-beating three to take a 49-43 lead into the break.
- MSU dominated the early portion of the second period, knocking down consecutive three-pointers to build a 13-point advantage (68-55, 13:30). William Paterson would slowly cut into the deficit and made it a one-score game following a pair of free-throws from senior Sean Smith (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) (92-89, 0:46). After a pair of MSU misses from the charity stripe, Uribe drained a buzzer-beating three-pointer to send the game into overtime.
- The Red Hawks used a 10-2 run to begin the extra session, but the Pioneers would again hit clutch shots to make it a one-point affair, 104-103, after a driving layup by junior guard Domenic Mignone (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford). Following an MSU timeout, Uribe's steal and score allowed WP to take its first lead of the period, 105-104. However, a deep two-point jump shot at the buzzer gave the Red Hawks the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Smith totaled a team-best 29 points on 9-of-16 (.563) shooting, while Mignone added 19 tallies and five rebounds.
- Junior forward Malcolm McLeod (Teaneck, N.J./Eastern Christian) enjoyed his best effort of the season, adding 17 points, and Uribe contributed 11 tallies and led the team with nine boards and five assists.
