Volleyball Splits Doubleheader Against Mount Saint Mary and John Jay

Pioneers sweep past Bloodhounds after falling to the Knights

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The William Paterson volleyball team (10-11) dropped a 3-1 decision to host Mount Saint Mary (11-16) before regrouping and sweeping past John Jay (5-16) during a non-conference tri-match Oct. 26.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED VS MOUNT SAINT MARY:
  • After dropping the opener, 25-19, WP hit a match-high 15 kills to take the second stanza, 25-18. Holding a slight 19-18 edge in the third, the Knights scored six of the final eight points to come away with the 25-20 decision. Mount Saint Mary closed out WP with a 25-17 triumph in the fourth set.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED VS JOHN JAY:
  • The Pioneers held the Bloodhounds to a -.054 hitting percentage in the first frame to cruise to the 25-15 win. William Paterson slammed 12 kills in the second set, and 14 in the third, to complete the sweep.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore middle hitter Jamie O'Shea (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) compiled 20 kills on the afternoon, while senior outside hitter Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) registered 17 and freshman Kayla Nelson (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Technical Institute ) tallied 12.
  • Sophomore setter Kristin Volavka (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) finished with 52 assists and 22 digs across the two matches.
  • Sophomore Kyla Sebello (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) finished with 27 digs, and freshman Gabriella Pimentel (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) ended with 21.

  • WP concludes its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) slate with a home match against Ramapo Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 7:00 p.m.
