Late Rally Falls Short as Football Suffers 21-14 Setback to Rowan

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson football (2-5, 0-4 NJAC) could not complete its fourth quarter rally as the Pioneers fell to New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Rowan (2-5, 2-2 NJAC), 21-14, Oct. 26.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Freshman running back Terrique Riddick (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) opened the scoring by capping off a seven-play, 92-yard drive with a one-yard rush. Junior placekicker Mahadye Paniahie's (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany ) extra point made it 7-0 at the 13:25 mark of the second quarter.
  • Aided by two turnovers, an interception and a fumbled kickoff return, Rowan scored three touchdowns in a span of 4:19 to take a 21-7 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • WP made it a one-possession game as senior quarterback Cornelius Kinchen (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) found junior tight end William Frese (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) on a 23-yard scoring strike with 8:46 remaining.
  • Following a Rowan punt, William Paterson got the ball back with just over two minutes left, but an interception by the Prof's Mike Mascioli ended the Pioneer's comeback bid.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Riddick finished with 84 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown, while junior running back Marcel Mason (Plainfield, N.J./Piscataway) added 69 yards on 12 attempts.
  • Frese caught three balls for a season-high 54 yards, and freshman wide receiver Rae'Kwon Jackson (Dover, Del./Dover) hauled in three passes for 34 yards.
  • Kinchen was 5-for-8 for 84 yards and a TD.
  • Defensively, senior linebacker Andrew Anthony (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) had a team-high nine tackles (eight solo) and a fumble recovery.
  • Sophomore linebacker Bryan King (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) made eight stops, including 3.0 tackles for loss, and classmate Nasir Adams (Newark, N.J./Hudson Catholic) tallied six tackles (2.0 TFL, 1.0 sack). Senior cornerback Hassan Williams (Roselle, N.J./Carteret) notched three tackles and his first career interception.
