Men’s Soccer Presses No. 2 Amherst before Falling, 4-2

Adams Has a Goal and Assist for Pioneers

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's soccer team (6-5-3) pressed No. 2 Amherst (10-0-2) until the closing moments, but the Mammoths were able to come away with a 4-2 victory Oct. 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A picked-off goalie kick led to a sprint up the right seam, pass to the middle, defender evasion and shot for a 1-0 Amherst lead 2:07 into the contest. The Mammoths made it 2-0 in the eighth minute with a pass across the box and finish from the right side.
  • Another ball up the seam, this time on the left side, and a quick move around the defender allowed Amherst to tack on a third goal at the 49:06 mark.
  • WP got on the board thanks to a foul on the edge of the box when senior forward Keysean Brant-Sharp (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick), a Mammoth defender and the Amherst keeper all collided just outside the top of the box. Senior forward/midfielder Kyle Adams (Bordentown, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) managed to drill the free kick around the wall and through traffic, finding the left side of the net for a 3-1 margin in the 67th minute.
  • The Mammoths used a long throw-in and conversion at the far post to make it a 4-1 score at the 78:47 mark.
  • Adams sent a corner kick to the far post and senior forward Keysean Brant-Sharp (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) headed it across the line from the right side of the box for the night's final goal with 3:05 remaining.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman goalkeeper Thomas Hatch (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) notched five saves for the Pioneers.
  • Ranked second in the nation a week ago, the Mammoths will ascend to the top spot when the next poll is released Oct. 15, as Amherst was coming off a 2-1 overtime defeat of No. 1 Tufts Oct. 12.

UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson travels to Rutgers-Newark for a 7:30 p.m. match Wednesday, Oct. 16.
