Football Suffers Setback at Christopher Newport

Pioneers upended by Captains 34-10

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior linebacker Andrew Anthony (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) and junior defensive back Isaiah Hunt (Edison, N.J./Edison) both recorded double-digit tackles, but William Paterson football (2-3, 0-2 NJAC) fell on the road to Christopher Newport (1-4, 1-1 NJAC), 34-10, Oct. 12.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Trailing 7-0, William Paterson drove 91 yards on 14 plays to level the score on a one-yard run by junior running back Marcel Mason (Plainfield, N.J./Piscataway) with 9:20 left in the second quarter.
  • Aided by three Pioneer turnovers, two fumbles and an interception, the Captains scored 20 unanswered points in a span of 5:17 to take a 27-7 lead into halftime.
  • On WP's first possession of the third quarter, a 54-yard pass play from senior quarterback Tracy Fudge, Jr. (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) to junior Siraj Abdul-Malik (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) helped set up a 34-yard field goal by junior Mahadye Paniahie (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany ) (27-10, 7:11).
  • CNU capped off the scoring with a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown by junior Jake Herzog.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Abdul-Malik hauled in four passes for a season-best 82 receiving yards.
  • Anthony posted a season-high 14 tackles (eight solo) and Hunt contributed 10 stops, including seven solo. Senior defensive end Dan Tomzick (Stockholm, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) set a new career-high with eight tackles, while classmate Brandon Yaw (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) and sophomore Nasir Adams (Newark, N.J./Hudson Catholic) each recorded 1.5 tackles for loss.
  • Fudge finished 9-for-15 for 132 yards and an interception.
  • Freshman running back Terrique Riddick (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) gained 36 yards on 11 carries, and Mason added 28 yards and a score.
