Pioneers Sweeps Doubleheader at Old Westbury Tri-Match

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The William Paterson volleyball team (2-0) opened the 2018 campaign with a pair of victories against Old Westbury (1-2) and SUNY Potsdam (2-1), respectively, at the Old Westbury Labor Day Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. OLD WESTBURY:
WP was led by Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) with a match-high 14 kills, while Jamie O'Shea (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) and Amanda Lembo (North Haledon, N.J./DePaul Catholic) added eight and seven, respectively. Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) paced the offense with 30 assists.
Defensively, Barbara Colizza (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) tallied 11 digs and Caruso added nine.
Old Westbury struggled offensively, hitting only .033 with 19 kills, while the Pioneers registered 42 kills and a .273 hitting percentage.
Joelle Desrosiers led the Panthers with nine kills, and Kyraleigh Zinnel dished-out 10 assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. SUNY POTSDAM:
Toman again led the team with 15 kills, while Chelliah Phillips (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) and O'Shea joined her in double-figures, chipping in 10 apiece.
Caruso had an impressive game, as she totaled 36 assists and 12 digs, while Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) led the team in digs with 27 and aces with three.
At the net, Phillips led all players with four blocks. Colizza and Dakota Apicella (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) added 19 and 12 digs, respectively.  
The Bear were paced by Monica Mack's 22 kills.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
WP has now won 12 consecutive season openers dating back to 2007.
The Pioneers have won eight straight meetings vs Old Westbury.
WP leads the all-time series against SUNY Potsdam 2-0, with the Pioneers winning the only other contest 3-2 in 2010.
 
UP NEXT:
WP opens its home slate with a non-conference tilt against Baruch College Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 7:00 p.m.
