Baseball Finishes Spring Break Trip with 10-2 Victory Against Becker

Carter, Miller Lead the Way for Pioneers

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – The William Paterson baseball team (9-5) finished its Spring Break trip with a 10-2 victory against Becker (4-8) March 17 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
 
The Pioneers posted seven unearned runs during the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore designated hitter Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) was hit by a one-out pitch and sophomore second baseman Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) singled through the left side before an error on a batted ball from senior catcher Jorge Solodkin (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) plated Dorio. Freshman left fielder Evan Smith (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) drew a base on balls, freshman center fielder Steven DiGirolamo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) had an RBI-fielder's choice, and freshman right fielder Dan Carter (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) singled in Solodkin. A Greg Cuevas (West New York, N.J./St. Mary (Rutherford)) walk loaded the bases, and hit by pitches for freshman third baseman Christopher Liriano (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) and freshman first baseman Carson Weis (Rivervale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) forced across two runs. Dorio and Ferrara were issued bases-loaded walks to make it a 7-0 score.
 
Back-to-back doubles by DiGirolamo and Carter added a run in the fifth.
 
A double, error, two singles and a sacrifice fly pushed across two Hawk runs during the top of the sixth inning.
 
WP added two more in the eighth when DiGirolamo walked, Carter singled, Cuevas hit an RBI-fielder's choice and Dorio doubled to right center.
 
Carter finished 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Dorio plated a pair of runs and DiGirolamo crossed the plate three times.
 
Senior Adam Miller (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) struck out five over 5.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits (1-0). Sophomore Jack DeFouw (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over 1.0 inning, and freshman Jake Kavanagh (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) walked one and struck out one in 1.0 inning of work. Classmate Christian Smith (Union Beach, N.J./Keyport) had two punchouts and one hit over 1.0 inning, and junior Ryan Tomao (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) gave up a hit while striking out two during 1.0 inning on the mound.
 
Junior outfielder Daniel Diaz and sophomore shortstop Ben Mazzone each went 2-for-4 for Becker. Senior starter Nicholas Hawrylciw (0-2) was charged with seven unearned runs, three hits and four walks, striking out two in 1.2 innings.
 
William Paterson will go to Manhattanville Tuesday, March 20, at 3:30 p.m.
