Ninth-Inning Rally Carries Baseball to 11-7 Victory at Manhattanville

Carter Has Three-Hit Effort for Pioneers

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Deadlocked at 6-6, the William Paterson baseball team (10-5) crossed the plate five times during the top of the ninth inning for an 11-7 victory at Manhattanville (3-7) March 27.

The Valiants used three singles and a bases-clearing double for a 3-0 edge during the bottom of the third inning.

Manhattanville added three more in the fifth, thanks to a pair of base hits, an RBI-groundout, walk, squeeze bunt and run-scoring single.

The Pioneers fought back for four runs in the top of the sixth. Freshman center fielder Steven DiGirolamo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) led off with a single to center and freshman right fielder Dan Carter (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) doubled down the left-field line before walks to freshman first baseman Carson Weis (Rivervale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) and sophomore third baseman Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) forced in a run. Freshman shortstop Greg Cuevas (West New York, N.J./St. Mary (Rutherford)) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, and a passed ball plated Weis before graduate student left fielder Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) notched an RBI with a sac fly to right.

WP evened the score at 6-6 in the seventh, Two-out base hits by Carter and Weis led to a run-scoring passed ball and a Perez RBI-double to left.

DiGirolamo was hit by a pitch and scored via a Carter double, Weis was hit by a pitch and Perez put down a sacrifice bunt before Cuevas was intentionally walked to load the bases. A Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) walk forced across Carter, and an error resulted in an RBI for Hoagland. A fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore second baseman Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) scored two more runs for an 11-6 score.
