Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to Five With a Sweep of Rutgers-Camden

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson women's volleyball team (14-1, 3-1 NJAC) picked up a huge conference win at home, topping Rutgers-Camden (6-11, 0-4 NJAC) 3-0 on Oct. 4.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Behind 19-12 in the opening set, Christine Griffith's (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) kill started a 9-2 Pioneer run that tied score at 21 apiece. Up 23-22, WP got consecutive blocks by Chelliah Phillips (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) and Jamie O'Shea (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) to take the opening frame 25-22.
  • In the second stanza, back-to-back kills by O'Shea and Camryn Norman (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) gave William Paterson an early 5-1 advantage. Rutgers-Camden was able to cut the deficit to three points late in the set, but would get no closer, as kills from Griffith and Amanda Lembo (North Haledon, N.J./DePaul Catholic) capped off an impressive 25-19 set victory.
  • Trailing late in the third set, the Pioneer defense forced the Scarlet Raptors into a handful of hitting errors to take the final session 25-23.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Phillips was a force at the net all evening, coming away with nine blocks. Griffith's 16 digs gives the senior 954 for her career, moving her into 10th place on the WP career list. Lembo recorded double-digit defensive scoops for the seventh straight game, finishing with 15.
  • Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) led all players 13 kills, while Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) dished out 27 assists.
  • Alyson Lowe's 12 kills paced Rutgers-Camden.

UP NEXT:
  • WP will compete in a non-conference tri-match with York (N.Y.) and Medgar Evers on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 11:00 a.m.
