Caruso Sets School Record, Volleyball Topples New Jersey City, 3-2

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Senior setter Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) set a new school record for career assists as the William Paterson volleyball team (13-1, 2-1 NJAC) earned a 3-2 road victory at New Jersey City (5-11, 0-5 NJAC) on Oct. 2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a back-and-forth first set win by the Gothic Knights, the Pioneers raced out to a commanding 16-4 lead in the second stanza, highlighted by a pair of Amanda Lembo (North Haledon, N.J./DePaul Catholic) kills. Back-to-back Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) kills provided additional separation as WP cruised to a 25-13 set victory.
  • In the third frame, WP's defense forced 10 NJCU hitting errors, leading to an 18-8 advantage. A trio of Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) kills gave William Paterson the game, 25-11.
  • Both teams traded points throughout the fourth, as neither side was able to establish any offensive momentum. With NJCU up 21-20, Stephanie Duque hit consecutive kills as the home team forced a fifth set with a 25-23 decision.
  • After NJCU started the decisive fifth set by jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead, Toman's kill, off the assist from Caruso, started an 8-0 run as WP never looked back. Chelliah Phillips' (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) kill punctuated the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) finished with 39 assists, giving the senior 2,671 for her career, establishing a new school record (2,643, Deni Sobieck, 2000-2003).
  • Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) hit .356 and a team-high 17 kills, while Amanda Lembo (North Haledon, N.J./DePaul Catholic) added 13.
  • Defensively, Barbara Colizza (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) paced the Pioneers with 17 digs, followed by Caruso (16), Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) (15) and Lembo (13).
