WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson tennis team (0-6, 0-5 NJAC) dropped an NJAC matchup at home against Kean, (3-3, 1-2 NJAC) 1-8 Wednesday evening.
It was the most dramatic match of the season for the Pioneers, despite the 1-8 final tally. Sophomore
Kaworu Ishikawa (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Twp.) kicked off the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win at first singles for her second singles win of the year. Sophomore
Sam Uribe (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) fought against Emily Kopp in the opening set, falling 4-6 before eventually succumbing 1-6 in the deciding frame.
The drama began in doubles play, when Ishikawa and freshman
Arrion Berry (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Twp.) forced a tiebreaker in first doubles against Naylah Hinton and Alyssa Peterson, but came up short 4-7 in the extra stanza. The duo of sophomores
Michele Boyle (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) and
Julienn Guzman (Jersey City, N.J./Liberty) also forced a tiebreaker in second doubles, but also were overcome by Rose Hughes and Anna Chan.
The Pioneers will be back in action Saturday, September 30 when they compete in the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Invitational.
