GLASSBORO, N.J. – The William Paterson women's soccer team slowed down Rowan in the second half, although a five-goal first half for the Profs (6-1-1, 2-0 NJAC) felled the Pioneers, 6-0, (4-4, 0-2 NJAC) Sept. 23.
Sophomore back Casey Lubonski possessed a loose ball in the box following a corner kick from senior midfielder Michelle Carpino and would deposit Rowan's first score in to the back of the net in the ninth minute.
Another loose ball bounced in Rowan's favor in the 13th minute, giving Rowan a 2-0 lead. Senior midfielder Danni Kitzinger took the bouncing ball out of the air, redirecting it to her classmate, forward Melissa Kelly, who found an open window in the goal.
Kelly was on the other end of Rowan's third goal, crossing a pass from the right wing for senior forward Shannon Reardigan, who put the Profs ahead 3-0 in the 15th minute.
A cross from the opposite wing off the cleat of junior forward Cathryn McCarry set up freshman midfielder Lauren Wood for the Profs next score, increasing WP's deficit to 4-0 in the 33rd minute.
Just short of five minutes later Wood assisted on a goal from senior midfielder Shannon Walsh to make it 5-0. Classmate forward Shannon Reardigan completed Rowan's scoring in the 52nd minute, taking a through ball from Kelly before giving Rowan the final, 6-0 lead.
The Pioneers stiffened up their backline the remainder of the way, stifling the Rowan attack for the next 38 minutes.
Sophomore midfielder
Lorraine Moffitt (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) and senior midfielder
Kristina Favo (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) both threatened goal for the Pioneers, but came up empty on their respective chances.
WP toppled Ramapo 6-2 last year and will look for a similar outcome when it hosts the Roadrunners Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 7:00 p.m.
