Adelman, Perez Lift Women’s Soccer to 4-0 Shutout of Ramapo

Adelman and Perez Tally Eight Combined Points in Third Shutout of Season

WAYNE, N.J.  – Despite missing two of her last three games, sophomore forward Marisa Adelman (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) showed no signs of rust, scoring twice and assisting on another goal alongside senior back Diana Perez (Ocean Twp., N.J./Ocean Twp.)'s goal and assist as the Pioneers (5-4, 1-2 NJAC) shut down Ramapo (3-5, 1-2), 4-0, Sept. 27.

Senior midfielder Kristina Favo (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick)'s first-career goal wouldn't be lost in the Pioneers' first New Jersey Athletic Conference win of the season, as she scored in the 30th minute to help ensure WP's control of the game.

The first 23 minutes of the contest were scoreless despite the Pioneers' tempo-controlling offensive that was outshooting the Roadrunners, 6-1. Adelman finally broke through for WP, weaving around a series of Ramapo defenders before lifting a shot that found a window between the outstretched hands of Ramapo sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Harvell and the crossbar, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.

Adelman was in pursuit once again, successfully dodging the Ramapo backline and drawing Harvell out of position before chipping a pass to Favo who scored on a wide-open goal in the 30th minute.

The Pioneers drew up a nearly identical play in the 41st minute, although Adelman was the recipient of a Perez assist this time as WP went up 3-0 on their way into the half.

WP capped off its scoring in the 74th minute when Perez used her height when she headed a goal inside the left post off a corner kick pass from classmate and defender, Adrianna Oliveira (Union, N.J./Union)

The Pioneers possessed a 19-9 advantage in shots, holding Ramapo at bay thanks to sound play and good decision making on the backline. Ramapo's best chance came in the 28th minute when sophomore midfielder Liliann Vizcaino clanged a free kick off the crossbar.

Senior WP goalkeeper Angela Sandelli (Landing, N.J./Roxbury) made five saves and came out of the box to make important clearance balls in the 26th minute and 71st minute. Perez had a strong presence in the back for WP, making a clear in the 69th minute as Sandelli was drawn away from the goal.

WP heads to New Jersey City to take on the Gothic Knights Saturday, Sept. 30, at 2:00 p.m. The Pioneers haven't lost to NJCU since 2011 and won last year's only contest, 2-1.
