Brant-Sharp Nets Game-Winner in Men's Soccer Overtime Thriller with Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore Keysean Brant-Sharp (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) put home a rebound with just under 40 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to push the William Paterson University men's soccer team past Elizabethtown 3-2 for the first Pioneer victory of the season Saturday evening.

The overtime dramatics were set up when the Pioneers (1-1, 0-0 NJAC) were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area with 41 seconds remaining in the overtime period. Senior JP Gonzales (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) fired a rocket off the free kick and Blue Jay goalkeeper Brian Gately made the initial save but could not control the rebound. Brant-Sharp quickly got a touch on the loose ball and deflected it into the back of the net to give the Pioneers the win.

Gonzales was a catalyst on the offensive end throughout the contest, scoring once and adding an assist while recording a team-high four shots. Sophomore Kyle Adams (Bordentown, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) added his first tally of the season as well and junior Charlie Lizardo (Newark, N.J./East Side) recorded an assist in the contest. Sophomore Kyle Quigley (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) made three saves on the night to earn the win in goal for William Paterson.

Elizabethtown (1-1, 0-0 Landmark) jumped on the Pioneers early in the contest, scoring just over eight minutes in, capitalizing on a rebound opportunity from eight yards out. The Pioneers were quick to answer though, as Gonzales fired a shot from just outside the box into the top right corner of the goal to level the scoring, 1-1. Despite registering seven shots in the final 18 minutes of the half, William Paterson could not push one across and headed into halftime with the score still tied.

The sustained attack continued in the early goings of the second half, as the Pioneers again rattled off five shots in the first 12 minutes of the period. Although William Paterson seemed to be in control offensively, Elizabethtown found a way through the Pioneer defense in the 66th minute, beating Quigley with a header off of a corner kick to retake the lead, 2-1.

The Pioneers showed life despite trailing late, and the efforts paid off when Lizardo headed a ball on to Adams who took one touch and fired a shot into the upper left corner to make it a tie game once again. The Pioneers put the pressure on late in regulation, earning three corner kicks and recording two shots but the Blue Jay defense stood tall and forced overtime.

Heavy pressure by the Pioneers made life tough for Elizabethtown throughout the overtime period and eventually proved to be too much for the Blue Jays as the foul 20 yards from goal set up the eventual game-winner from Brant-Sharp.

The Pioneers will return to action Wednesday, September 6 when they host Lehman College in their home opener at Pioneer Soccer Park with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
