WAYNE, N.J. – Despite a very strong start, the William Paterson volleyball team (5-4, 0-2 NJAC) could not overcome Ramapo (8-2, 1-0 NJAC) Tuesday evening inside the William Paterson Recreation Center.
Junior setter
Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) captained the offense well again Tuesday, tallying 37 assists in the match. With the performance, Caruso has now accumulated 1,799 assists for her career, surpassing Tara Van Laere '01 for second place all-time at William Paterson.
Also making major contributions Tuesday was sophomore
Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) and juniors
Amanda Lembo (North Haledon, N.J./DePaul Catholic) and
Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional). Toman led the Pioneers with 16 kills, while Lembo put down a career-best 15 kills in the loss. Griffith had a sensational defensive performance, recording a career-best 28 digs.
The Pioneers came out strong early, taking an 8-3 lead thanks in part to a 5-0 run. William Paterson eventually stretched the lead as far as 15-6, but the strong-powered Roadrunners came storming back, making it 19-17 late in the set. Another late rally by Ramapo pulled them even at 23-23, but kills by Griffith and Toman stopped the run and gave the Pioneers the opening set 25-23.
The scripts flipped somewhat in the second set, as the Roadrunners jumped out to the early lead but this time it was the Pioneers charging back midway through the set. A 7-0 run for William Paterson gave them an 18-13 lead and momentum appeared to be back on their side. The Roadrunners once again would not go down quietly, chipping away at the lead before taking the final seven points of the set to level the match 1-1.
In the third, the two squads continued to battle back and forth, exchanging handfuls of points before finding themselves tied 20-20. Two kills and two aces helped the Roadrunners again go on a run to close out the set, securing the final five points to take set three 25-20 and take a 2-1 lead. The momentum continued into the fourth set for Ramapo, with the Roadrunners running away with a 25-11 set victory and took the match 3-1.
The Pioneers will look to earn their first conference victory on Thursday when they travel to Rutgers-Camden, with the match scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
