WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (0-3, 0-2 NJAC) suffered a 41-14 loss to Rowan (3-0, 2-0 NJAC) Sept. 16 during the Pioneers' home opener.
Senior Kelvin White, Jr. and junior
Kyle Fanning (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) found the end zone for WP. Sophomore linebacker
Corey Anthony (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) paced the defense with 10 tackles.
The Profs scored on their first possession after back-to back runs of 35 and two yards by junior Anthony Diorio. Senior Tyler Knighton kicked the PAT and Rowan owned a 7-0 advantage 2:11 into the contest.
After the two teams exchanged punts, Knighton connected on a 26-yard field goal with 2:52 remaining in the opening period. A 47-yard Jamel Smith punt return less than two minutes later allowed the Profs to finish the quarter with a 17-0 edge.
Rowan produced the only points of the second period on a 39-yard Naldy Tavarez-to-J.J. Kulcsar post play 81 seconds before halftime.
Diorio opened the third quarter with a 69-yard score (31-0, 14:40), and after turnovers on three consecutive snaps, the Profs converted for three points on a Knighton 34-yard field goal (34-0, 9:58).
Junior
Cahsim Henry (Lindenwold, N.J./Lindenwold) picked up 44 total yards on three consecutive carries, and after a 15-yard Prof personal foul, White found a gap on the left side of the field and ripped off a 26-yard TD. Sophomore
Brandon Harley (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken)'s extra point was good, making it a 34-7 margin with 8:37 to play in the third.
Sophomore defensive back Kameron Kennedy picked up a fumble and returned it 52 yards to the end zone, pushing Rowan ahead by a 41-7 count with 41 seconds on the clock in the third period.
Freshman linebacker
Bryan King (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) recovered a Prof fumble inside the Rowan-15, and four plays later Fanning took a pitch left and crossed the goal line with 2:47 left for the game's final points.
Sophomore quarterback
Mike Yarosz (Montague, N.J./High Point Regional) was 4-for-16 for 42 yards and an interception, while Henry picked up 60 yards on 10 rushing attempts. Four different WP players came down with a reception.
Anthony finished with 10 tackles and junior linebacker
Charles Faulkner (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) had nine. Sophomore linebacker
De'Shaun Morris (North Plainfield, N.J./Bergen Catholic) added 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble.
Tavarez went 10-for-17 for 94 yards and a score under center, and Diorio rushed 12 times for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Kulcsar caught seven passes for 75 yards and a TD.
Sophomore defensive backs Nate Lanier and Joe DiBara each made six tackles for the Profs.
William Paterson will host No. 24 Wesley Saturday, Sept. 23, at 1:00 p.m. at Wightman Stadium.
