PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Three players scored in the second half and the William Paterson men's soccer team (4-1) closed out the St. Joseph's College Invitational Tournament with a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine (2-2) Sunday afternoon.
With the three goals on Sunday, the Pioneers wrapped up the weekend with five goals while not conceding a goal, taking home the 2017 team title. Sophomore keeper
Kyle Quigley (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) was named the Goalkeeper of the Tournament, and junior back
Charlie Lizardo (Newark, N.J./East Side) earned Defensive Player of the Tournament honors.
The balanced offensive attack for the Pioneers continued Sunday, as sophomore
Dromo Quaye (North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield), and freshmen
Christopher Fuentes (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and
Antonio Illiano (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) each tallied their first career goals in the win. William Paterson now boats 11 different goal scorers this season, with sophomore
Darwin Cruz (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) as the lone multi-goal scorer.
The Pioneers dominated the contest from the opening kick Sunday, racking up 12 shots and seven corners in the first half alone, but four saves from Huskie keeper Richard Glemawu kept the score tied 0-0 at the half.
The pressure proved to be too much for the Huskies however, as the Pioneers broke through in the 49
th minute for the game's first tally. From the left wing, sophomore
Keysean Brant-Sharp (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) sent a low cross into the box where Quaye finished inside the left post to give William Paterson a 1-0 advantage. In the 66th minute, Southern Maine was assessed a red card, forcing the Huskies to play man down over the final 23 minutes of the contest.
With the man advantage, the Pioneer offensive pressure continued to find space in the attacking end. In the 72nd minute, Cruz found space in the box and blasted a shot that was stopped by Glemawu, but Fuentes was on the doorstep to put home the rebound for his first goal, doubling the advantage to 2-0 late in the second half. Illiano put the game out of reach for good in the 87th minute when Cruz got off a shot in the box that was blocked initially, but found the feet of the freshman who put home the rebound for the final tally of the contest to give William Paterson the 3-0 victory.
The Pioneers finished with a season-high 26 shot attempts in the contest, tying their season-high in shots on goal with 12 while holding Southern Maine to just five shot attempts, two on target. Senior
Tim Morris (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) stopped both shots on target to earn his first career win and first career shutout.
William Paterson returns to action on Wednesday when they host Medgar Evers College at Pioneer Soccer Park with kick off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
