WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (6-6-2) generated a four-run eighth inning to come from behind and earn a 4-4 tie with Staten Island (6-3-1).
In the top of the second inning, freshman left fielder Glenn Glennerster reached with a one-out walk before an error and a single loaded the bases. Senior center fielder Bobby Drake drove in Glennerster with a two-out RBI-single, although junior right fielder
Anthony Hoagland (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) kept the WP deficit at 1-0 by throwing out CSI junior first baseman Josh Mercado at the plate.
The Pioneers threatened in the bottom of the third when Hoagland singled up the middle, but Drake threw out sophomore third baseman
Jon Bernotas (Andover, N.J./Newton) at home to end the inning.
With senior first baseman
Eriq Colon (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) standing on third and nobody out, Staten Island junior starter Tom Musso induced a groundout, strikeout and fly out to end the Pioneers' half of the seventh.
CSI loaded the bases on a walk, single and fielder's choice before Glennerster extended the Dolphins' lead to 4-0 by splitting the gap in right-center field for a three-run triple in the top of the eighth inning.
WP's eighth inning rally started when sophomore center fielder
Garett Wiedemann (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) walked, Bernotas singled to right and freshman second baseman
Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) drew a base on balls to load the bags. Hoagland, Colón and Perez each recorded RBI-singles before senior
Mike Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) made it 4-4 with a bases-loaded walk. Junior right hander Derek Jentz registered back-to-back strikeouts to keep it a tied score and end the eighth.
Sophomore left hander
Chris Babb (West Milford, N.J./DePaul Catholic) allowed just one unearned run in 7.0 innings of work, striking out four while scattering four hits, one walk and a hit batsman in a no-decision effort.
Junior right hander
Adam Miller (West Orange, N.J./West Orange), freshman left hander
Zach Polzer (North Haledon, N.J./Passaic County Tech) and junior right hander
Frank Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) all worked in relief for the Pioneers. Miller surrendered two earned runs in 0.1 inning, Polzer gave up one earned run in 0.0 inning, and Colasante pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless ball.
Musso worked 7.0 innings for the Dolphins, striking out five while allowing five hits, two walks and one hit batsman.
Hoagland went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Bernotas finished 2-for-4 to help lead the Pioneers.
Glennerster went 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBI, one walk and one run scored to lead CSI.
William Paterson will compete at Staten Island Tuesday, March 28, at 4:00 p.m.
