Women’s Basketball Drops 76-65 Overtime Decision at Rutgers-Newark

Clark, Woetzel Both Have Double-Doubles for Pioneers

NEWARK, N.J. – Senior forward Janea Clark (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) and junior forward Tori Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) each posted double-doubles but the William Paterson women's basketball team (13-9, 8-7 NJAC) dropped a 76-65 overtime decision at Rutgers-Newark (9-13, 7-8 NJAC) Feb. 4.

With three regular-season games remaining, William Paterson is tied for fourth in the league standings. The top six qualify for the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament that begins Feb. 18.

Clark notched new career highs with 17 points and 17 rebounds, while Woetzel had 14 tallies and 10 boards. Freshman guard Gabby Harris (South River, N.J./South River) contributed 13 points.

The Pioneers led by as many as 12 (37-25, 0:23) before taking a 37-30 advantage into the locker room. WP expanded its edge to double digits at 49-39 heading into the fourth quarter before an 11-7 Scarlet Raider run knotted the score at 59-59 with 2:38 on the clock.

Senior guard Maria Simmons and sophomore guard Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) traded baskets before a Simmons layup handed Rutgers-Newark a 63-61 edge with 1:40 left. After a Pioneer turnover and Scarlet Raider miss, Rovito connected on a layup to forge a 63-63 tie with 45 seconds remaining in regulation. A Rutgers-Newark turnover and William Paterson missed layup sent the two teams into overtime.

The Scarlet Raiders took control during the extra session, scoring the first eight points as WP was 0-for-8 from the floor.

Simmons paced Rutgers-Newark with 37 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Sophomore guard Faith Ashby added 15 tallies. The Scarlet Raiders took advantage of a 15-24 turnover margin to outscore WP off the miscues, 24-6.

William Paterson will host The College of New Jersey Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 8:00 p.m.
