Women's Basketball Comes Up Short at Cabrini, 60-55

RADNOR, Pa. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (5-5) was upended by Cabrini (6-2), 60-55, in a non-conference matchup Dec. 19.

Junior Ashley Castillo (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) led the Pioneers with 12 points and seven rebounds, while classmate Carolyn Hill (Martinsburg, W.V./Spring Mills) netted 10 points and hauled in six boards. Lexi Edwards scored a game-high 18 points for Cabrini.

The shooting numbers were nearly identical for both teams, with WP hitting 35 (18-52) percent of their shots while Cabrini knocked down 37 (21-57) percent. The Cavaliers held a slight advantage in rebounding, 42-36, and a 21-14 edge in points off turnovers.

After the Pioneers scored the first four points of the contest, the Cavaliers countered with 14 unanswered to help them build a 20-13 lead at the first-quarter break. After a low-scoring second period, Cabrini extended the lead to as many as 18 points (45-27, 3:10) in the third quarter. WP whittled the deficit down to just seven after junior Julie Rovito (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) knocked down a three-point basket late to trail 49-42 with 10 minutes remaining.

Back-to-back layups by Rovito made it a three-point game (56-53) with 2:34 remaining, but the Pioneers were held without a point until freshman Danica DeFrank (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) put in a layup with five seconds remaining, as Cabrini held on for the 60-55 victory.

The Pioneers will have their longest break of the season before returning to action Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Roosevelt's 21st Greyhound Classic hosted by Moravian College. WP will take on Penn State–Lehigh Valley in the opening round matchup at 12:00 p.m.
