NEWARK, N.J. - Junior Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) recorded 25 assists to amass 2,000 for her career, leading the William Paterson volleyball team (13-8, 2-5 NJAC) to a 3-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark (8-13, 1-6 NJAC) on the road Tuesday evening.
Caruso becomes the second Pioneer in program history to reach the 2,000 assist mark in a career, trailing only Deni Sobieck '03 for the all-time record. Junior Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) led WP with nine kills while fellow junior Chelliah Phillips (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) and sophomore Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) chipped in seven kills each. Phillips also added a match-high five blocks, including four solo blocks.
The Pioneers set the tone of the match early, using a 6-0 run midway through the opening stanza to pull out to a 19-8 advantage. The lead proved to be too much for the Scarlet Raiders, and the Pioneers closed out the set 25-18 to take a 1-0 advantage in the match. Rutgers-Newark was not ready to go down easy however, putting up a much more contested fight over the next two sets.
After being tied 18-18 in the second frame, the Pioneers used three kills by Toman to pull away and close out the set 25-20. It was close again midway through the third, with WP trailing 13-12, but another big run by the Pioneers gave them a 21-16 lead and they never looked back. Two blocks and a match ending kill by Phillips helped give the Pioneers their second conference victory of the season, 3-0.
The Pioneers will be back in action Thursday, October 17 when they travel to Brooklyn to take on Pratt Institute at 7:30 p.m.
