Men's Soccer Settles for 1-1 Homecoming Draw with Stockton

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – A second minute strike was not enough for the Pioneers as the William Paterson men's soccer team (9-4-2, 3-3-1 NJAC) battled Stockton University (10-3-3, 2-3-2 NJAC) to a 1-1 draw Saturday evening on Homecoming.

Sophomore Cameron Allen (Old Bridge, N.J./Saint John Vianney) deposited his ninth goal of the season in the tie, while fellow sophomore Kyle Quigley (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional) was impressive in his return in goal, making six saves on the night.

The Pioneers came out with an electric start to the contest, putting the offensive pressure on the Ospreys from the opening kick. Just 77 seconds into the contest, sophomore Keysean Brant-Sharp (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) sent a cross into the box in the direction of classmate Dromo Quaye (North Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield). Quaye's header deflected to Allen who got just enough to knock the loose ball past Osprey keeper Kellen Groover for the game's opening tally. The Ospreys tried to respond late in the half, finishing with a 5-2 edge in shots, forcing Quigley to make four saves in the opening 45 minutes but the sophomore stood tall and kept Stockton scoreless and the Pioneers carried the one-goal advantage into halftime.

The WP defense continued to stand tall in the second half, fighting off multiple flurries of attacks by the Ospreys. It was a very emotional 45 minutes of action, with eight yellow cards handed out in the second half. Stockton's pressure finally paid off in the 80th minute, when Joseph Dismak buried a shot inside the six in the top netting off of a free kick from the right flank to level the scoring and eventually force overtime with the score deadlocked 1-1.

Both squads had opportunities in extra time, but neither team could push a goal across and the Pioneers were forced to settle for a tie and one point in the conference standings.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Monday, October 16 for their final non-conference slate of the season when they travel to Randall's Island to take on Baruch College at 5:00 p.m.
