Volleyball Stymied by Montclair State, 3-0 Thursday

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson volleyball team (12-8, 1-5 NJAC) was tripped up by Montclair State (11-9, 3-4 NJAC) to end their three-game win streak, falling to the Red Hawks 3-0 inside the Recreation Center Thursday evening.

Junior Amanda Lembo (North Haledon, N.J./DePaul Catholic) led the Pioneers with seven kills, while freshman Dakota Apicella (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) added five kills and five digs. Junior Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) added another double-digit dig game, compiling ten digs in the loss and junior setter Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) recorded 22 assists, pulling her within 12 assists of the 2,000 mark for her career.

After a tight battle early in the contest, the Red Hawks put back two blocks to take over momentum and never looked back, pulling away for a 25-16 opening set win. The Pioneers came out with a new energy in the second set and looked to have shifted the momentum in their favor. Midway through the second stanza, senior libero Julianna Ginefra (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) made two phenomenal digs on consecutive plays to electrify the crowd, but a timeout by the Red Hawks stymied the energy and helped Montclair State take five of the next six points to retake the lead, 16-15. After another lead change, the Red Hawks went ahead with a kill by Schyler White to make it 20-19 and never looked back, taking the frame 25-21.

The Red Hawks continued to roll in the final set and the Pioneers could not come up with an answer for the Montclair State attack which added 15 kills in the final set to down WP 25-13.

The Pioneers will have the weekend off before traveling to Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday, October 17 with the opening serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
