Volleyball Splits Matches at Manhattanville Tri-Match

Pioneers Defeat John Jay, Fall to Valiants

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The William Paterson volleyball team (2-1) defeated John Jay (0-2) by a 3-0 score before falling to host Manhattanville (3-0) in straight sets Sept. 3.
 
The Pioneers started the day with a 25-13, 25-19, 25-19 victory against the Bloodhounds. Senior outside hitter Erin Roach (Clark, N.J./Union County Vo-Tech) collected 12 kills and 14 digs, while freshman outside hitter/middle hitter Alyson Toman (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) had 12 kills. Sophomore setter Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) contributed 31 assists and seven digs, sophomore outside hitter Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) added 19 digs and sophomore outside hitter Amanda Lembo (North Haledon, N.J./DePaul Catholic) posted nine kills and 10 digs.
 
Senior outside/opposite hitter Jeanette Luna led John Jay with 11 kills, adding 10 digs. Senior setter Katrina Zapanta dished 29 assists, and junior outside hitter Rachel Eng collected 18 digs.
 
WP fell to Manhattanville by scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-21. Roach registered team bests of nine kills and 17 digs, and Caruso posted 21 assists and seven digs. Junior libero Julianna Ginefra (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) finished with 16 digs, and Griffith had 10.
 
Junior middle hitter Kerry Mackey put down 17 kills to lead the Valiants. Senior setter Megan Quinabo notched team bests of 45 assists and 20 digs.
 
William Paterson will play its home opener Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7:00 p.m. against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn.
