GLASSBORO, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (17-17, 6-8 NJAC) lost a 9-2 decision at Rowan (22-13, 10-4 NJAC) April 24.
The Pioneers struck first, as junior center fielder
Mike Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) reached on a one-out error, was sacrificed to second by senior third baseman
Victor Sanchez (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland), moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single to center field by graduate student shortstop
K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) during the top of the third inning.
The Profs answered with two scores in the home half of the same frame, as a Greg Myers single, error and run-scoring base hits from senior left fielder Eric Oliver and freshman third baseman Dillon Mendel made it a 2-1 game.
Rowan added two more in the fourth, using a Matt Jolly leadoff home run, Evan Hughes single, Steven Todd sacrifice, stolen base and Myers RBI-single.
Oliver doubled to center field, and two batters later, Jolly drove him in with a base hit to left for a 5-1 score in the fifth.
Oliver started the seventh with a hit by pitch and Jolly hit a two-out double to add one more run.
A double to right center by senior right fielder
Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) and an infield single from sophomore second baseman
Rob Eggert (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) led to a run-scoring base hit by junior left fielder
Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) in the top of the eighth inning.
The Profs finished the scoring with three two-out runs in the bottom of the eighth, stringing together two singles, an error and a Mendel two-run base hit.
Rowe was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Eggert finished 2-for-4. Abate went 2-for-5 and scored a run.
Sophomore
Bryan Kopko (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) made his first start of the season and allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits with one walk in 4.1 innings (4-3). Freshman
Eric Rosenberg (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) tossed 2.2 innings and gave up three hits and one run while striking out two. Sophomore
Mario Danza (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Twp.) pitched 1.0 inning and surrendered three unearned runs on three hits.
Jolly was 4-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI. Senior Dylan Johannick pitched 5.0 innings as the starter, allowing five hits, one unearned run and two walks while striking out five (1-1).
William Paterson will play at Purchase Tuesday, April 26, at 4:00 p.m.
