WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (15-14, 4-6 NJAC) suffered 3-2 and 8-0 losses against visiting Stockton (5-18, 2-6 NJAC) April 16.
Game One
WP's comeback bid fell short as Stockton started the day with a 3-2 victory.
The Ospreys crossed the plate once during the top of fourth inning. Senior left fielder Matt Mangarella and senior second baseman Vaughn Champion provided one-out base hits, and after a strikeout, wild pitch and Bryce DiPaolo walk loaded the bases for sophomore catcher Antonio Morello, he singled through the right side of the infield for a 1-0 lead.
Mangarella put down a two-out bunt single, senior third baseman Bryan Bessinger singled through the left side and Champion delivered an RBI-single up the middle to make it a 2-0 margin in the fifth.
Bessinger doubled to right field to open the seventh inning, and Champion's base hit to center left runners on the corners for Stockton. Champion stole second before a foulout, and DiPaolo followed with a suicide squeeze bunt that made it a 3-0 score in the Ospreys' favor.
The Pioneers got two back during the home half of the seventh. Senior designated hitter
Jordan Aughey (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) led off with a single down the left-field line, and senior third baseman
Victor Sanchez (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) dropped a base hit into left that the fielder misplayed, allowing the ball to bounce over his head to advance the runners an extra 90 feet. A groundout by sophomore second baseman
Rob Eggert (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) plated Aughey, and after junior left fielder
Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) was hit by a pitch, Sanchez scored on a
Mike Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) groundout.
Six different Pioneers came up with singles, and Eggert and Abate accounted for the runs-batted-in.
Freshman
Chris Babb (West Milford, N.J./DePaul Catholic) gave up three walks during the first 0.2 inning. Freshman
Eric Rosenberg (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) surrendered two runs on six hits and one walk, striking out five over 4.0 innings (1-1). Sophomore
Steve Duda (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) tossed 2.1 innings and allowed three hits, one run, one walk and two strikeouts. Freshman
Chase Strynkowski (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) gave up one hit in 0.2 inning, and senior
Mitch D'Amato (Edison, N.J./Edison) had one strikeout while throwing the final 1.1 innings.
Champion finished 3-for-5 and drove in a run. Junior Kevin Buell started and threw 6.1 innings of five-hit ball, giving up two runs (one earned) while striking out two and walking three (1-1). Senior Ryan Adamski earned his first save, giving up one hit and one walk in 2.2 innings.
Game Two
The Ospreys finished the sweep with an 8-0 win.
Stockton hung two runs on the scoreboard during the top of the third inning. DiPaolo led off with an infield single and freshman catcher Jake Voss drew a base on balls before sophomore shortstop Tyler Hobbs came up with a sac bunt. Senior right fielder Matt Poinsett's fly ball to right drove in DiPaolo, and senior Dan Sweeney singled in freshman catcher Jake Voss.
The Ospreys added three more in the fifth. Sweeney hit a one-out infield single, and when he took off on a stolen-base attempt the throw behind him was off-line, leaving him at third base. Mangarella's base hit into right field plated Sweeney, and a Bessinger single and fielder's choice resulted in runners on the corners. Champion stole second before junior center Stephen Struble walked. DiPaolo's hit by pitch forced across Mangarella, and a Voss RBI-single to left field pushed it to a 5-0 margin.
Three straight hits by Hobbs, Poinsett and Sweeney led to a Bessinger RBI-single, Champion bases-loaded walk and Struble sac fly to make it an 8-0 game in the sixth inning.
Senior right fielder
Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) went 2-for-3 and Abate was 2-for-4 for the Pioneers.
Freshman
Kevin Ludden (Monroe, N.J./Monroe Twp.) surrendered five runs on nine hits and two walks, striking out one in 4.1 innings. Freshman
Chris Phillips (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) walked one batter while registering 0.1 inning, and Strynkowski had five hits, three runs, one walk and a strikeout during 1.1 innings worked. Freshman
Jeff Lombardi (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) scattered three hits over 3.0 innings, issuing one base on balls.
Bessinger finished 4-for-5 with a run scored to lead the Ospreys at the plate. Senior Mike Bergin pitched the complete game, allowing seven hits and two walks with eight strikeouts (1-6).
