Baseball Fights Back for 14-11 Victory

Pioneers Rally to Defeat Staten Island

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – Trailing 7-5 in the middle of the sixth inning, the William Paterson baseball team (11-7) fought back for a 14-11 victory March 29 against Staten Island (10-7).

The Dolphins took the early edge, using a leadoff walk, Nick Delprete single and error for a 1-0 first-inning advantage, and three base hits, a pair of wild pitches and an error made it a 4-0 game in the second.

The Pioneers pushed three runs across in the bottom of the third. Senior third baseman Victor Sanchez (Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) opened the frame with a single up the middle and advanced to second via a wild pitch. Senior left fielder Tyler Garguilo's (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) infield single left runners on the corners, a two-out base hit by graduate student shortstop K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) drove in both runners, and senior right fielder Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) then singled in Abel.

Three consecutive base hits and a double resulted in a 7-3 CSI lead during the top of the fourth inning, but WP answered with two scores during its next at-bat as singles by sophomore second baseman Rob Eggert (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) and Sanchez were followed by a two-run Garguilo double to right-center field.

William Paterson took a 9-7 lead in the sixth. Eggert opened the frame with an infield single and Sanchez walked before a Garguilo sacrifice and a Mike Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) infield single loaded the bases. Abel drove in two runners with a base hit through the left side, and Kenny nudged WP ahead with his RBI-single through the right side. A later pair of errors accounted for the final run of the inning.

The Pioneers tacked on four more scores in the bottom of the seventh. A Jon Bujtas (Boonton, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) walk, Eggert base hit and Sanchez bunt single loaded the bags before a Garguilo RBI-groundout and Abate two-run double down the left-field line. Junior pinch hitter Mike Rowe (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove) extended it to a 13-7 margin with his base hit through the right side.

CSI got one run back thanks to a pair of errors, a walk and a sac fly during the top of the eighth, but WP used a Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) base hit, Bujtas hit by pitch, Eggert single and Garguilo sacrifice fly for a 14-8 margin at the end of the inning.

The Dolphins finished the scoring with a three-run ninth, stringing together three base hits, two walks and a wild pitch.

Sanchez was 3-for-3 while scoring four runs, and Eggert went 4-for-5 and scored three times. Abel finished 2-for-5 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored. Garguilo was 2-for-3 while adding a double, four RBI and a run scored.

Senior Mitch D'Amato (Edison, N.J./Edison) allowed four unearned runs on seven hits and a walk over 3.0 innings, striking out four. Freshman Chris Babb (West Milford, N.J./DePaul Catholic) improved to 3-0 with 3.0 innings of three-run ball, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out two. Freshman Eric Rosenberg (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) surrendered one unearned run, one hit and a walk while posting a strikeout over 2.0 innings, and sophomore Steve Addesso (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) threw 0.2 inning and allowed three runs on three hits and two walks with one strikeout. Classmate Bryan Kopko (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) earned his third save by recording the game's final out.

Senior shortstop Joe Palmeri led CSI at the plate, finishing 3-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Juan Rodriguez took the loss in relief with 0.1 inning of action, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits.

William Paterson will host St. Joseph's-Long Island Wednesday, March 30, at 3:30 p.m.
