Volleyball Splits Matches at Manhattanville Tri-Match

Pioneers Defeat Farmingdale State, Lose to Host Valiants

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The William Paterson volleyball team (7-4) split a pair of matches at Manhattanville's tri-match Sept. 19, earning a 3-0 victory against Farmingdale State (2-5) before suffering a 3-1 loss against the host Valiants (8-2).
 
The Pioneers started the day with a 25-21, 26-24, 25-12 triumph against the Rams. Junior outside hitter Erin Roach (Clark, N.J./Union County Vo-Tech) collected 12 digs and a match-high 13 kills, freshman setter Kendall Caruso (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) added 11 digs to her match-best 26 assists, and senior libero Michelle Merida (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) led all players with 18 digs. Senior opposite hitter Nicole Spicer (Whiting, N.J./Manchester Twp.) added 10 kills and nine digs, while freshman outside hitter Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) had nine digs.
 
Junior middle blocker Barbara Wright paced Farmingdale State with 11 kills, senior setter Megan Pisciotta had 22 assists, and sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Etersque and senior libero Francesca Calderon each tallied 11 digs.
 
After winning the first set against Manhattanville 25-13, the Pioneers dropped the next three by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-12. Spicer contributed 15 digs and a match-high 17 kills, Roach had a double-double with 11 kills and a team-best 17 digs, and Caruso dished 34 assists while collecting 14 digs. Merida and Griffith had 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
 
Sophomore outside hitter Kerry Mackey led the Valiants with 15 kills, junior setter Megan Quinabo finished with 44 assists and junior outside hitter Alissa Primavera posted 18 digs.
 
William Paterson will host Ramapo Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7:00 p.m.
