Box Score GLASSBORO, N.J. – Sixth-seeded William Paterson (14-21-1, 7-10-1 NJAC) saw its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Baseball Tournament run come to an end with a 5-4 loss against third-seeded Montclair State (22-16, 13-5 NJAC) May 3 at Rowan.
Sophomore shortstop
K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) hit a one-out double down the left-field line and senior designated hitter
Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) drove him in with a single to right, making it a 1-0 game during the top of the first inning. However, that lead was short lived as the Red Hawks' Christopher Reynolds hit a two-run double to center for a 2-1 score after one complete.
Third baseman Connor Abreu knocked in two more MSU runners with a sixth-inning double to center field, pushing Montclair State's advantage to 4-1.
WP got two of those runs back in the top of the seventh. Abel singled through the left side and senior third baseman
Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) had a base hit down the right-field line, followed by an RBI-groundout off the bat of sophomore right fielder
Jimmy Kenny (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) and sophomore first baseman
Alex Derner's (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) single that plated Pasternak.
The Red Hawks added an insurance run thanks to two singles and a sacrifice during the home half of the same frame, nudging MSU ahead by a 5-3 count.
That run ended up being the difference as William Paterson rallied during its last at-bat. Pasternak started the inning with an infield single to second, Kenny had a base hit through the left side and the two runners were sacrificed an extra base by Derner, putting the tying run on second. An error allowed freshman catcher
Brady Pevny (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) to reach, advancing Kenny to third and scoring Pasternak to pull the Pioneers within one, but a missed bunt on a squeeze play resulted in Kenny being tagged out at home, and the final out of the game was recorded via a strikeout.
Abel and Pasternak were both 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Sophomore starter
Frankie Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned) over 5.0 innings, striking out one and walking two (1-4). Junior
Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) gave up a run and three hits in 1.2 innings, and classmate
Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) walked two and struck out a pair during his 1.1 scoreless innings.
Reynolds finished 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Dylan Papa (5-2) allowed three runs on six hits over 7.1 innings, posting two strikeouts and a walk. John Silvestri picked up his fourth save with 1.2 innings of work, giving up a run and two hits with three strikeouts.
