Baseball Falls at Montclair State

Pioneers Drop 17-3 Decision

Box Score MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (11-19-1, 5-10-1 NJAC) suffered a 17-3 loss at Montclair State (18-15, 11-5 NJAC) April 25.
 
The Red Hawks used seven singles to put up seven runs during the bottom of the second inning before the Pioneers posted a pair of scores in the third. Sophomore first baseman Mike Sasso (West Orange, N.J./Montclair Kimberley) and sophomore left fielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) had base hits, and senior third baseman Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) drove them in with his double to left field.
 
A two-run double helped MSU add four more runs during the fourth, and a double and single made it a 12-2 score after five innings.
 
After two Montclair State runs in the seventh and three in the eighth, freshman catcher Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) plated sophomore shortstop K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) with an RBI-single to left field.
 
Pasternak finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Frankie Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) allowed seven runs (four earned) and seven hits in 2.0 innings as the starter (1-3), and classmate Cavan Penberthy (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) gave up four hits and four runs (three earned) during 2.0 innings of action. Junior Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) surrendered a run and two hits, striking out three, during 2.0 innings, classmate Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) allowed two runs (one earned) and three hits in 1.0 inning, and  junior Tom Gaccione (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) gave up three runs and three hits during 1.0 inning on the mound.
 
Freshman right fielder Ryan Long led the MSU offense with a 3-for-4 effort, posting a double, four RBI and two runs scored. Junior Jonathan Torregroza tossed the complete game, surrendering three runs and eight hits while striking out seven (4-2).
 
William Paterson will finish the regular season against Rutgers-Newark Saturday, April 26, at 11:30 a.m. at Rutgers-New Brunswick's Bainton Field.
