Pioneers Suffer 16-7 Loss

Sophomore Jared Guglielmino was 3-for-5 and scored twice at Farmingdale State.
Box Score FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – William Paterson (0-1) suffered a 16-7 loss at Farmingdale State (5-1) in its baseball season opener March 11. Sophomore right fielder Jared Guglielmino (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored twice, while senior first baseman Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) was 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored at the plate.

Senior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) reached base on a one-out single and later scored on a wild pitch, and freshman center fielder Mike Abate (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) scampered home thanks to a passed ball after he got aboard due to a fielder's choice, giving WP a 2-0 second-inning lead.

A bases-loaded fielder's choice and an RBI-single by the Rams evened the score during the home half of the second, but Haughney tripled in senior designated hitter AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) and sophomore third baseman K.C. Abel (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) drove in Haughney with a double to right center, making it a 4-2 score by the middle of third.

A sacrifice fly cut the lead in the half during the bottom of the third inning. The Pioneers got the run back in the top of the fourth via a Guglielmino leadoff single, a Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) sacrifice bunt and a Haughney run-scoring single.

A walk, sacrifice, two base hits, a stolen base and an error resulted in two Farmingdale State runs and a 5-5 game after four. Abate singled in freshman catcher Mike Knauf (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) to again hand William Paterson a lead, 6-5, during the top half of the fifth inning.

The Rams took their first lead of the game with two unearned fifth-inning runs, then took control of the game with a five-run sixth before tacking on four more in the seventh inning.

Guglielmino started the top half of the eighth inning with a single and two-base error. He scored thanks to the second error of the frame for the final run of the game.

Senior starter Josh Jensen (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) tossed the first 3.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits, walking two and striking out a pair of Rams. Sophomore Frankie Colasante (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) took the loss (0-1), giving up six runs, three of them earned, and four hits in 2.0 innings of work. Junior Joe Moran (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) surrendered seven hits and seven runs, four of them earned, in 1.2 innings, while senior Jake Menzo (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) provided the final 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Junior shortstop Anthony Alvino led the Rams at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with a double, run scored and four RBI. Six hurlers saw action for Farmingdale State, with junior middle reliever Shaun Milito picking up the victory (1-0) with 1.1 innings of one-run work.

William Paterson will play Baruch at the Brooklyn Cyclones' MCU Park Thursday, March 13, at 3:30 p.m.
