Scouting the Pioneers
William Paterson is 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) following a 26-15 loss at Cortland (1-1, 1-0 NJAC) Sept. 21.
Senior
Ryan Gresik (Newton, N.J./Newton), a member of the 2012 All-NJAC Team Honorable Mention, is 86-for-130 for 900 yards, completing six touchdown passes to five different teammates. The Sept. 8 NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, he is now WP's career leader in completions (452), attempts (761) and yardage (4,969).
Sophomore
Matt Deiana (Somers, N.Y./Somers) leads the ground game with 19 carries for 70 yards.
Senior
Mick Paye (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) is the Pioneers' leader in receptions (18) and yardage (243), finding the end zone once. Senior
Brian Winfield (Newton, N.J./Newton) has caught 17 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.
Junior linebacker
Ben Allen (Ventnor, N.J./Atlantic City) paces the defense with 26 tackles (16 solo, 6.0 TFL, 1.0 sack). Senior linebacker
David Zurla (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) has 25 stops (12 solo, 2.0 sacks), and junior defensive back
Elijah DeGuzman (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) has collected 17 tackles (11 solo) and forced a fumble.
Senior wide receiver/punter
Julian Frazier (Plainfield, N.J./North Plainfield), the Sept. 8 and Sept. 22 NJAC Special Teams Player of the Week, has punted 16 times for an average of 43.4 yards (first in NJAC, ninth in Division III). He has also caught 14 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown.
Junior placekicker
Robert Sinegra (Wharton, N.J./Morris Knolls), an honorable-mention all-NJAC selection in 2011, is 7-for-7 on PATs and 3-for-5 on field-goal attempts this fall.
William Paterson returned five offensive starters and four defensive starters from a 2012 team that finished 5-5 overall and 2-5 in NJAC play. The Pioneers, who welcomed back 49 letterwinners and two all-conference selections, were predicted to finish sixth in the 2013 NJAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
Scouting the Privateers
Maritime is 0-2 overall and 0-0 in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) following a 7-6 loss against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (3-0) Sept. 21.
Freshman Ryan Heizman is 4-for-11 for 85 yards, completing one touchdown pass. Junior Paul Briggs leads the rushing attack with 28 carries for 117 yards.
Senior Sean Belsky is the Privateers' leader in receptions (three, 49 yards), while junior Greg Caneparo has caught two passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore linebacker Kameron Knight paces the defense with 16 stops (eight solo, 2.0 TFL), one interception, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. Junior linebacker Nick Coffiey also has 16 tackles (12 solo, 1.5 TFL) and one forced fumble and recovered, while junior linebacker Duke Alvora has collected 14 stops (10 solo).
Alvora has also punted four times for an average of 34.5 yards, and freshman John Arny has three punts for an average of 45.7 yards.
Sophomore placekicker Diogo Dietrich is 2-for-3 on PATs and 2-for-3 on field-goal attempts this fall.
The Privateers finished 3-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play last season.
