WAYNE, N.J. – Trailing by as many as eight, William Paterson (16-6) rallied to score 12 unanswered runs and pulled away from visiting Baruch (11-9) for a see-saw 22-14 baseball victory April 9.

Five different Pioneers had three-hit efforts.  Junior second baseman Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills) went 3-for-6 with two doubles, four RBI and a pair of runs scored, senior first baseman Vin Fondacaro (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) finished 3-for-5 and added a double, four RBI and three runs scored, and junior outfielder AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was 3-for-5 and crossed the plate four times.  Junior catcher Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) had a 3-for-4 effort that included a home run, three RBI and three runs scored, while freshman outfielder Tyler Garguilo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) finished 3-for-4 with a triple, four RBI and three runs scored.

Freshman Angel Tejeda's two-run single helped the Bearcats jump out to a 3-0 first-inning lead, and an error, walk, Nicholas Pomo-Rowan RBI-double and John Yuksekol sacrifice fly made it a 5-0 score by the middle of the second.

Flores started the bottom half of the second with a base hit up the middle and Fondacaro walked to bring Haughney to the plate.  His single up the middle plated Flores, getting the Pioneers on the board.

A two-out error allowed two Bearcats to touch home in the top of the third, extending it to a 7-1 lead, but William Paterson answered during its next at-bat with five runs of its own when Ptaszynski drove a two-run double to right center and junior third baseman Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) launched a two-run homer to center, cutting the margin to 7-5.

Six runs on four singles, a base on balls and two hit by pitches gave Baruch a commanding 13-5 edge by the middle of the fourth.  However, junior shortstop Rob Pasternak (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) started the home half of the inning with a leadoff triple and scored via a Garguilo base hit.  Garguilo later crossed home when Ptaszynski doubled to left-center field, making it a 13-7 game.

Three consecutive singles loaded the bases to open the bottom of the fifth, and Garguilo drove them all in with a two-out triple, cutting the deficit to 13-10.  After a single, fielder's choice and double made it a 14-10 count during the top of the sixth, WP tied it up with four runs during its next at-bat, taking advantage of Fondacaro's two-run double that was immediately followed by a Haughney homer to right.

The Pioneers took their first lead of the game during the bottom of the seventh inning, hanging eight runs on the scoreboard.  Senior outfielder Ryan Gibbons (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) broke the deadlock with his RBI-single to plate Garguilo, Fondacaro drove in a pair with a double, and Pasternak's second three-bagger of the day accounted for three RBI.

Sophomore starter Ryan Monaghan (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) allowed seven runs, three of them earned, and six hits in 3.0 innings.  Freshman Derek Hyland (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) accounted for five runs in 0.1 inning, and senior Matt Goitz (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) surrendered four hits and two runs in 2.2 innings. Sophomore Kevin Cowan (Elizabeth, N.J./Roselle Catholic) was the pitcher of record, finishing the game by throwing 3.0 scoreless innings and striking out two while walking one (1-0).

Freshman Jasdeep Buttar was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and sophomore Nicholas Pomo-Roman finished 3-for-6, adding two doubles and a pair of RBI for the Bearcats.  Freshman Joseph Cali tossed the first 5.1 innings, giving up 13 runs (11 earned) and 14 hits.  Reliever Christopher Maisonet took the loss (4-3), allowing seven runs in 0.2 inning.

William Paterson will play Centenary Wednesday, April 10, at 3:30 p.m. at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J.
