WAYNE, N.J. – Second-seeded William Paterson (27-11) pulled away from fifth-seeded Ramapo (25-13-1) for a 6-1 victory April 30 in the opening round of the double-elimination New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Baseball Tournament. Senior
Tim O'Shea (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) struck out 10 for the complete-game victory, and junior shortstop
Rich Guillod (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley-Demarest) went 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two RBI and a pair of runs scored.
The Pioneers will host third-seeded Rowan, a 13-0 winner April 30 against fourth-seeded Richard Stockton, in the NJAC Tournament second round Thursday, May 2, at 3:30 p.m. at Jeff Albies Field. Top-seeded Kean, an 8-3 victor against sixth-seeded The College of New Jersey, will host the weekend portion of the tournament Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5.
The No. 26 Roadrunners scored immediately, pushing across a runner during the top half of the first inning. Freshman shortstop Joe Venturino began the game with a single through the left side of the infield, was sacrificed to second by junior John Capuano and later scored when senior third baseman sent a single into center field.
O'Shea worked out of a bit of a tight spot when freshman catcher Ryan Rinsky and sophomore outfielder Zach Carroll started the top of the fourth with base hits, but a fly ball to right and two strikeouts ended the threat. WP loaded the bases with two outs during the bottom half of the same frame, but senior outfielder
Ryan Gibbons' (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) long fly ball was caught by Ramapo right fielder Dave Jacob on the warning track.
The Pioneers seized the lead with a two-run fifth. Guillod opened the inning with a home run over the fence in left-center field. Junior first baseman
Trevor Haughney (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) later drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored via sophomore designated hitter
Mike Arnold's (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) two-out single to left.
Guillod led off the home half of the seventh with a base hit to center. Senior catcher
Vin Fondacaro's (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) come-backer was handled and thrown to first, but Guillod was running hard on the play, and junior first baseman Brandon Berger's throw to third was off line, allowing Guillod to come all the way around from first and cross the plate to hand William Paterson a 3-1 edge.
WP tacked on three more during the eighth. Arnold delivered a leadoff base hit up the middle and was sacrificed to second by junior second baseman
Scott Ptaszynski (Wharton, N.J./Morris Hills). Freshman outfielder
Tyler Garguilo's (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) RBI-single to right center plated Arnold, and an error from a ball off the bat of junior outfielder
AJ Flores (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was enough to allow Garguilo to cross the plate. Guillod singled in Flores for the final run of the day.
Arnold was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, and Ptaszynski finished 2-for-3. O'Shea improved to 6-1, scattering seven hits and issuing two walks as William Paterson ran its win streak to seven games.
Senior second baseman Anthony Vinci had the only multi-hit effort for the Roadrunners at 2-for-4. Senior starter Travis Zilg fell to 4-2, surrendering three runs on nine hits over 7.0 innings of work, walking four and striking out three.
